Freemium video player, VOD platform

MX Player is a freemium lifestyle app that not only lets you play and watch videos, but also allows you to edit them to some degree. It has specific touch gestures for convenience, so you don’t have to be bothered to keep checking its menu interface for the settings.

Although it was initially launched solely as a video player, MX Player now has video-on-demand (VOD) and streaming capabilities. Such services are limited to a handful of countries, though. For the rest of the world, the app is still only a multimedia player.

With much to offer

Just like other media players, MX Player comes with basic functions such as rewinding, controlling volume, adjusting brightness, setting playback speed, switching to full-screen mode, as well as repeating or shuffling content. It supports multiple video file formats in HD, saving you the hassle of looking for a format converter. With the timeline slider, you can control precisely where you’d like to start a video. Screen interaction is enhanced with settings toggles, brightness and volume adjustments, and video fast-forwarding or rewinding are all possible just by swiping the screen.

Notably, you can play videos from your Google Drive and Dropbox accounts as long as you have an internet connection. Unlike most basic players, this option offers advanced features such as video trimming and screen-capturing. You can cut your favorite scenes and save them in a different storage location, and your screen-captured photos are automatically saved in your photo gallery. For uninterrupted viewing, a screen lock option is available to prevent accidental touches from interfering with the video.

However, despite these advanced features, the app is not always 100 percent reliable. The app is prone to crashing and may hang if the screen sleeps, often requiring a restart. Some users have reported issues with the controls not responding correctly. While optimized for iOS, the player surprisingly lacks AirPlay support, despite having integrated features with Google, Dropbox, and YouTube. It boasts smooth playback and an audio boost of up to 200 percent, but the app itself sometimes struggles to run for several hours without issues.

Relaunch and additional services

In early 2019, MX Player was relaunched as an Over The Top (OTT) platform. This strategic decision introduced original programming to its offerings, making it a comprehensive entertainment service. Its content portfolio was enriched by licensing content from various Indian and International studios including FilmRise, Sonar Entertainment, Screen Media Films, Goldmine, Hungama, Shemaroo, Paramount Pictures, Sony Entertainment, and Sun TV Network. It eventually broadened its content spectrum by tying up with the Ullu App to include adult content.

With an MX Gold subscription, users can enjoy ad-free streaming of web series and movies and get early access to new releases. Its generous selection offers more than 150,000 hours of exclusive content in various local languages, coupled with easy-to-read subtitles. You can download your favorite videos for offline viewing, create a watchlist for later, and enjoy music playback even while browsing other content or when the app is in the background.

Tailored to your preferences, the app allows you to filter content in your preferred languages. Choose from an extensive range including English, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Marathi, and Kannada. However, it’s important to note that the OTT service is only available in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. If you’re located in a country that’s not mentioned, you’ll only get to access the media player side of the app.

Worth checking out

In conclusion, MX Player has grown beyond being a simple video player, transforming into a versatile entertainment app with a range of capabilities. It’s a multifunctional platform that allows users to watch, edit, and even stream videos with user-friendly controls and robust features. Despite its occasional technical glitches and regional limitations, its transition into a video-on-demand platform has significantly expanded its offerings. Original content, coupled with content from renowned studios, enhances the user experience.

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.

We’d like to highlight that from time to time, we may miss a potentially malicious software program. To continue promising you a malware-free catalog of programs and apps, our team has integrated a Report Software feature in every catalog page that loops your feedback back to us.
